The attendance was amazing; out of 83 participating pairs, our children came 8th, 15th and 36th, which is a very good result overall.

Congratulations to all of them for their collaboration and perseverance.

I am glad to hear that John and Alice Visited your school while they were in UK in Aug-Sept 2011. The two have brought us good news that your school wishes to have a link with our school Rukungiri Modern p/s. This is very welcome. We are ready and willing to see this link established, grow and continue as the two schools work together on various link programmes

We hope that this link will be established and that the two schools will be communicating on a regular basis through letters, Emails, faxes and telephones

We are also determined to do all that we need to do as the school so that the link grows.

We greetings from the school community, children, staff and management. We have sent you photos of children on the morning assembly, staff, Head teacher and his Deputy.

They did absolutely brilliantly. All three participating teams were presented with a complex mathematical problem. Although they were allowed to write down calculations throughout, they were not allowed to write down any answer at any point, otherwise they would be disqualified. They were expected to use their reasoning skills so solve the problem, but were also scored on their presentation skills and their teamwork.

It got a little bit tense towards the end; as the time was running out and the pressure was mounting, the team was divided for little while as to a possible solution. They were debating with each other, but they managed to pull it off!

Although their score was quite high, with a few more points the team would have gone through to the National Grand Final at Cambridge University. Despite all that, this is an amazing achievement and congratulations to our team.

They came to speak to the children, along with Chris Holloway from St Mary the Bethany Church in Woking, about their school and the lives of the children in their care.

The children were fascinated to hear about the school, which was established in 1992 by John and Alice to provide an education for the deprived children in the area. The school now has over 850 children and although they have over 60 children in a class they have still managed to become the top school in Uganda.

Years 4 and 5 were given the opportunity to ask questions and find out how their lives differ from the children at Rukungiri School and how they could help make the children’s lives better. The children asked excellent questions about the curriculum, malaria and family life. Mrs Botting then spent time with John and Alice talking about a possible link between the schools and giving them a tour of Greenfield.

This was a wonderful opportunity for the children to find out about a country and life style that is complete different to their own and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

In fact, parents have ‘complained’ that they are having to get up earlier because their children are so keen to come to Breakfast Club – even though they don’t need to!

The children arrive at 7.30am to be greeted by the wonderful smell of sausages, bacon and even pancakes. Coffee is there for parents to enjoy while they chat to their children, before dashing to work, and it will not be long before they cannot resist the temptation of a wonderful cooked breakfast!

The lunchboxes returned to school thick and fast, packed with wonderful items and accompanied by cash donations from parents to cover the cost of shipping. A total of £210 was raised. A representative from Samaritan's Purse came to the school to collect the lunchboxes and donations and explained that they were being sent to Liberia and that the donations would be very gratefully received by the children there.

Both teams had amazing afternoons, working collaboratively on a number of maths activities from spatial to numerical puzzles, from “Tangrams” to “Broken Calculators”. The attendance was amazing; whilst the Y3 were among 6 teams, the Y5 team were among 42 other participating schools. On Wednesday morning, forensic fingerprint consultant, Mr. MacLeod, visited Year 5 to talk to them about his job. As part of this visit, he discussed fingerprint examination and allowed the children to have their own fingerprints taken! Thank you to Mr. MacLeod for an excellent lesson!

Caroline Lawrence is the author of a very successful series of children’s books called ‘The Roman Mysteries’.

She spoke at length about how she became an author, her inspirations and her training. As a keen historian, she studied classics at university in America and she specialised in the ancient cultures such as the Greeks and Romans. She had read an inspiring book as a child which then prompted her to become an author: she wanted to pass on her knowledge and enthusiasm to others. She is based in London and draws her ideas from the many films she watches and books she reads. Caroline shared her tips for being a successful author and explained how artefacts can give her ideas for her books. She was entertaining and amusing and the children really enjoyed the talk.

The children were given the chance to buy a copy of her book, which she personally signed for each child. It was a very quiet journey home as many of the children were reading – they really couldn’t wait to get started!

Tara de Klerk took part in the national semi-finals of the Schools’ Biathlon at Crystal Palace in February. She started with an amazing run and finished her 500M in a time of 1:37:49, a great 5th place. After a few hours wait she achieved another PB in her 50M swim at 35.66 (a 20th place for the swim). Overall this resulted in a 10th place, a fantastic result. Well done and good luck in the finals Tara!!

All five children ran to their absolute best with the Greenfield boys’ team coming 7th in the county, a great result.

Tara ran brilliantly, coming a nail-biting third place in a field of 146. Harrison (20th), Jack (22nd), Harry (77) and Jamie (84) in a field of 160.

A special mention must go to Harry who showed incredible determination by running half the course wearing only one shoe and one muddy sock after his shoe came loose and fell off.......fortunately it was recovered later by a nearby Marshall!

This was a new fixture for Greenfield so we didn’t know what standard competition to expect. The U10 team found themselves under pressure from the start with the opposition spending a lot of time in and around our goal. However, with some staunch defending from Clare F the score remained 0-0 until just before half time when Greenfield finally got a quick breakaway and scored (Natalie H) against the run of play. Greenfield had more possession in the second half but still struggled to get out of their half. Feltonfleet eventually scored two goals to win 2-1. This was a fair reflection of the game but with signs of improvement from our young U10 team. Well played.

Our experienced U11 team started really positively scoring their first goal very quickly. It soon became evident that Greenfield was significantly stronger than their opposition and had quickly scored a few more goals. Greenfield took advantage of their greater ability and went on to win 9 - 0 . . . a Greenfield record I think!!!!

Goals: Eleanor (3) Tara (2) Phoebe (2) Isobel (1) Bethan (1)

Hot Lunches coming soon!

We are delighted that Greenfield will be providing hot lunches from the Autumn Term. To learn more about Brookwood, the new catering company that will be providing the meals, please look at their newsletter: Brookwood Bite

We went there on the minibus! The vicar spoke to us all. Then we split up into two groups with Kate and Tina and went around the church looking at all the different things. Then we filled out a worksheet and did some drawing and colouring. Next we had a snack. Then we came back to school on the minibus. We had a really fun time and learnt lots of interesting things.

The PMC, run by the Mathematical Association, is aimed at the top 60% of pupils in Years 5 and 6. It is a test with multiple-choice problems for the first twenty questions; well balanced enough to give everyone a chance to have a go, with more thought provoking problems toward the end of the challenge that encourage higher order thinking skill.

This time round we have four mathematicians from Year 6 whose scores were high enough to be invited into the National Finals on February 2nd 2011. Congratulations to Callum B, Ella F, Harry M and Adam O, with wishes of good luck for the Finals.

This maths competition took place at the Explore Learning Centre in Knaphill. It’s a lovely centre recently opened inside the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Knaphill that is promoting Maths and English.

Our mathematicians were excited about all the challenges they were presented with, ranging from Fibonacci numbers to finding the next term in an algebraic sequence. They worked exceptionally well as a team, competing against other schools that took part. However, in the final table they were just two points short for progressing into the “Regional Final”. The maths team did their absolute best and deserve congratulations, especially as they came so close.

The children are going to be presented with certificates in one of our future assemblies.

Special thanks go to Mrs Fowden who provided transport there and back.

For the first time in many years it was a lovely dry & bright autumn afternoon, perfect conditions for running and all the children responded by giving 100% effort. The U9 teams included 5 year 3 runners who were taking part in their first competitive cross country race; they had to complete 2 laps of the course approximately 1.3 Km. In a field of around 45 runners Matthew (year 4) came 4th, a tremendous run from him. Another noteable individual results in the U9 race was Kai (Year 4) (10th)

The U11 runners had to compete 3 laps of the course approximately 2.1Km. Again in a very large field of runners Tara (Year 6) ran an excellent race to finish 3rd despite falling in the woods.

A special mention should go to the U11 boys who performed excellently as a team:

Harrison (Year 5) (7th), Jack (Year 5) (8th), Jamie (Year 4) (13th), Harry M. (Year 6) (16th) & Callum (Year 6) (35th)

Well done to everyone & thanks to the many parents who came to support.

Harvest

THE JOY OF HARVEST

The Early Years Department braved the wet weather on Wednesday and went pumpkin picking at Garson’s Farm in Esher. We were prepared for a very soggy day and were pleasantly surprised when the sun began to shine. The children had a glorious morning splashing in deep puddles and choosing their own prize pumpkin to take home. Some children could barely carry their chosen pumpkin and had to reassess their strength and find a smaller, lighter one! We were also able to pick some plums, sunflowers and corn, all of which were used in the splendid harvest display, just in time for the Harvest assembly, held the following day. All the children in the Early Years contributed to this assembly by singing a pumpkin song which was delightful. The Reception Class will be cooking a pumpkin and the seeds in their weekly cooking lessons next week and together with Pre-Prep, will be painting fruit and vegetables next week. All the children thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful experience and spent the rest of the afternoon washing the mud off their pumpkins in the wonderful sunshine.

On the 29th of September 2010 year 5 went on an exciting trip to the Guildford museum and a Victorian class. We left school at 9:00am. When we arrived at the Victorian class the people we met where called Emily and Mrs Smith. We went up to the classroom and Jack and I sat at the front. Mrs Smith taught us Victorian lessons. She said we had to remember “back straight, hands behind your back.” When you answered a question you needed to stand up, say the answer, and say “Maam” and sit back down. We had a chance to play with Victorian toys like cup and ball, hoop la, a bowling game, Jacobs’s Ladder and a pinball game. After the Victorian class we went outside to play. The lessons were spellings, geography, drawing and handwriting with ink pots and a quill. We had to dip this into ink. At Guildford Museum, we saw many toys that the Victorians played with. We had a work sheet to fill in. It asked questions about the Victorian times, for example, where they went on Sundays, and what was the only toy you could play with, (which was Noah’s ark). We then went in a room about Lewis Carroll. We also saw a room with a simple Victorian room. It had a mouse in it! Next, we went into a room with a mini Guildford from the Victorian times. Lastly, we went to the gift shop. I bought a Victorian penny key ring, fool’s gold, an amethyst and polished gem stones.

Firstly we walked to Woking Station and we caught the train to Surbiton. We waited for a little bit and then caught the train to Hampton Court Station. We walked across the bridge and then arrived in Hampton Court Station. My first thoughts on Hampton Court were its very big and beautiful. We went inside Hampton Court and then got a sticker that was a bit like our ticket to enter Hampton Court. This lady dressed like a Tudor showed us to the first room we entered .It was the grand hall where all the servants eat; it’s so big because there were so many servants. She talked a bit about what the Tudors jobs were and what they wore according to their jobs. Then she gave us all parts to be there was a Duke, Duchess, Ladies in waiting, clerks and servants. Then she showed us the haunted gallery and she said that there was 1 spot in the whole gallery that was several degrees colder than the rest and that were Catherine Howard ghost was. Then King Henry VIII came and we all bowed down and said Long Live the King. Then the lady went away. We walked the way to get audio guides and then made are way to the kitchens. We saw raw meat I thought it was disgusting. We made are way to see how the Tudors made their dinners. We went to the Fish Court and saw some stew like the Tudors would eat it. We gave are audio guides back and went. The lady recommended us going to the Chapel Garden and there was some posts and there was a different animal on each post. We walked to a little sort of gallery and we found out that about 20 years ago there was a fire in Hampton Court and if there weren’t residents living there, Hampton Court would have been ruined. When we were in the little gallery there was some glass and a little model of the grand hall and other things. After the little gallery we went to King EdwardsIII exhibition and I found it very interesting. I found a lovely glass chandelier and I wanted in my bedroom. Finally we went to the shop and I bought a picture of Hampton Court and a magnet of a crown. We walked across the bridge again to Hampton Court Station and made a stop at Surbiton and then we got to Woking Station. Then we walked back to school and I was very tired!!

On Wednesday year three went on a historical walk. First we got on the coach, I sat next to Ross. Eventually we got dropped off, and then we had to walk the rest the way. Finally we met our guide for the day. We were split into two groups. First we went to the Guildhall after our group were let in. Then we went into the court. The leader would look at the person to see if they looked guilty and if they did not look guilty he/she would be set free at once. If they did look guilty he/she would be put in prison. After that our group walked to the Gorge Abbot Hospital. My group had a quick look around then the Master appeared from around the corner and invited us to the chapel. It had stained glass windows. The actual chapel was built in 1621 and there were pews which we got to sit down on. It was fun listening to the Master who told the story about the stain glass windows. After that we visited George Abbot Hospital where we were told by our tour guide that if you were 60 or over and you had lived in Guildford most of your life and you didn’t have much money, only then you could stay there. After that we went to look at Guildford castle, it was on a hill that had good views. We were told some interesting information that St James built it. We looked at the Palace ruins where we imagined it.

By Jamie, Year 3

At Guildford

We went to the castle and it was interesting. At Guildford castle we saw where the toilet waste would have gone. We went to a fantastic museum and did a quiz and went to the shop where there was lots of Alice in wonderland things! In the past, at George Abbot hospital, you would ring the pity bell to get some soup. Guildhall was built in 1300 and had a massive clock and bell. We saw the Angel hotel and where they would have kept the horses.

By Elisa and Ella, Year 3

GUILDFORD

On Wednesday 29th September Year 3 and Year 5 went to Guildford for the day.

First of all we met our guide and then she showed us Guild Hall, where the meeting place was. The Council Chamber was also there and we saw the Mayor’s Robe.

After that we went to George Abbot Hospital where we saw the Chapel, and we also saw two shops on the High Street which were originally a hotel (one of them was Sainsburys).

Next we went to Guildford Castle and saw the ruins of an Old Palace. A little further down the street we saw the arch where a portcullis used to be before it was removed.

Then we visited Rosemary Alley where all the sewage used to run down. It was originally called Rosemary Alley because people used to pick up rosemary and rub it between their fingers so that they couldn’t smell the horrible smells from the sewage.

At the Angel Hotel we saw the place where an old crane used to be to lower food for animals like horses.

Finally we met up with the other group and we all went to the museum. We did a worksheet about looking at pottery and other things and then we went to the shop and bought things with our pocket money. Then we watched a short film about the history of Guildford and before long it was time to go home!

THE END

The U9 football team played their first match of the season at St. Bede’s on Monday. The first half was very close and in fairness, St. Bede’s deserved to be ahead. Only some good defending by Kai (Yr4) and Alex L-L (Yr4) together with some safe goalkeeping by Harry (Yr4) kept our goal intact. The second half was more one sided as Greenfield gradually got on top. Matthew (Yr4) and Luke (Yr4) began to dominate in midfield and they both scored to give us a two goal lead. St. Bede’s unfortunately put through their own goal to complete the scoring and give Greenfield an encouraging win.

Netball – The Marist Tournament

The U11 netball team played in a 14 school tournament last week. Despite not qualifying for the finals the team played some very good netball showing some real improvement from last year. Two of the games lost were to the two eventual finalists & winner. We had very good draws against The Marist & Hoebridge, much larger schools than Greenfield...well done girls!

Games Won: 1

Games Drawn: 2

Games Lost: 3

Everyone had a super time. We visited a war museum and war grave cemetery; we also went to a créperie for lunch and visited the old town of Boulogne where we spent plenty of money, shopping at a market. We went into the cathedral and enjoyed the town trail. We made croissants in a bakery and spoke lots of French. The most enjoyable part, I think we would all agree was every evening on the beach, playing games, paddling in the sea and making fascinating sculptures of sand! Thank you to the teachers for making our final Greenfield Trip such fun.
