Greenfield children are encouraged to learn a modern foreign language (MFL) from an early age. Pupils in Year 1 begin French lessons and from Year 2 Mandarin is introduced. Our aims in teaching MFL are that children will:
- be able to understand some everyday spoken language
- be able to read and write with some accuracy
- be able to speak to others with confidence and make those people understand them
- gain an insight into the life and culture of the country
- enjoy language learning such that they will be able to tackle further foreign language studies with confidence
Emphasis is placed on enjoyment of the use of language and on pupils developing the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as they progress through the school.
At the end of Year 6, children have the opportunity to participate in a residential trip to France where they practise using the language and learn more about the culture. There are also cross-curricular links with history and science.
