I am delighted to share with you that our team of four mathematicians, consisting of Hidde and George from Year 6 and Trupti and Clare from Year 5, represented our school in the Regional Final of the National Young Mathematician Award and came first!
They did absolutely brilliantly. All three participating teams were presented with a complex mathematical problem. Although they were allowed to write down calculations throughout, they were not allowed to write down any answer at any point, otherwise they would be disqualified. They were expected to use their reasoning skills so solve the problem, but were also scored on their presentation skills and their teamwork.
It got a little bit tense towards the end; as the time was running out and the pressure was mounting, the team was divided for little while as to a possible solution. They were debating with each other, but they managed to pull it off!
Although their score was quite high, with a few more points the team would have gone through to the National Grand Final at Cambridge University. Despite all that, this is an amazing achievement and congratulations to our team.
